Israel’s cabinet on Sunday approved a deal with Hizbollah for the release of Lebanese and Palestinian prisoners in exchange for the return of the two Israeli soldiers whose abduction triggered the summer war in Lebanon two years ago.
Ehud Olmert, Israeli prime minister, said the decision brought to an end a ”painful chapter”. At the same time, he dampened the remaining hopes of the soldiers’ families by saying the two men were almost certainly dead.
