A Moscow court may halt a new trial into the murder of Anna Politkovskaya after prosecutors on Wednesday backed calls by the campaigning journalist’s family for the case to be sent back for further investigation.

Russia’s Supreme Court had ordered the case to be heard for a second time after a first trial acquitted three men who were accused of being accomplices in the 2006 killing, fuelling doubts her murderers would ever be convicted.
