Democrats signal hope for approval of Gates

Senior Democrats signalled on Sunday that they hoped to complete swiftly the confirmation process for Robert Gates to replace Donald Rumsfeld as the new US defence secretary during the “lame-duck” session of the outgoing Republican­ dominated Congress which begins on Monday.

It may be one of the few concrete measures agreed over the coming weeks.
