Tax measures in Azores led to legal tussles

The special tax measures applied by Portugal in the mid-Atlantic Azores islands – and now proposed as a model for Northern Ireland – have generated controversy since their introduction six years ago.

In spite of tussles between Portugal and the European Commission, the measures appear neither to have attracted a significant number of new companies to the islands nor substantially benefited the local economy.
