Alberta slips into recession

Alberta, Canada’s once-booming, oil-rich province, acknowledged on Thursday that it has slipped into recession and will record its first budget deficit since 1993.

The hitherto debt-free province also warned that turmoil in financial markets has taken a sizeable bite out of the Heritage Savings Trust Fund, set up to cushion the local economy from dips in energy prices.
