CBA in talks to buy BankWest

Executives from Commonwealth Bank of Australia were last night locked in talks with HBOS to hammer out a deal to buy BankWest, the Australian subsidiary of the beleaguered UK bank.

A deal, which could value BankWest at A$2bn ($1.4bn), could be reached this morning Sydney time, people familiar with the discussions said.
