ID card adviser urges drastic rethink

The latest effort by the government to relaunch its controversial identity card scheme received a setback on Thursday when its own independent adviser called for a fundamental rethink.

Sir James Crosby, former HBOS chief executive, warned that the “highest level of trust” required to prove the scheme was socially, politically and financially viable would not be achieved unless important aspects of its operation were taken out of the hands of Whitehall.
