‘I like the idea of open expanses’

The British composer and pianist Michael Nyman, 63, was born in Chingford, east London. He studied at the Royal Academy of Music and in 1968 was the first to apply the term minimalism to music. His work has reached its largest audience through film scores for directors Peter Greenaway, Jane Campion and Michael Winterbottom. The Michael Nyman Band will perform at the Barbican in London on Thursday.
