Shares of Netflix sank 40 per cent on Friday after the online DVD rental company said it was cutting prices ahead of the expected entry into the market of Amazon, the biggest online retailer.

Netflix said late on Thursday it would lower its monthly fee from $22 to $18 from November. It was also postponing its planned UK launch for a year to deal with the expected upsurge of competition in the US.
