Blair's chances in black and white

The New Statesman, once considered Labour's in-house journal, this week urged its readers to vote tactically against Blairite candidates in the general election, underlining the extent of disenchantment with Tony Blair's government among the Labour-supporting press.

It is a far cry from 1997 when Mr Blair swept to power on a popular anti- Conservative wave that had engulfed much of Fleet Street.
