Detroit gears up for an overhaul

As a high-stakes game of musical chairs unfolds in the global motor industry, carmakers are being forced to ask themselves which assets they want to keep, and what they want to buy or sell.

Those questions have become especially pressing for those considering a closer relationship with Chrysler, the smallest and most vulnerable of the three Detroit-based carmakers, now controlled by Cerberus Capital Management, the New York buy-out group.
