Brown urges Karzai to reinforce Helmand troops

Gordon Brown, UK prime minister, has appealed to Hamid Karzai, Afghanistan's president, to send more troops to reinforce British forces in Helmand province, amid rising political concern in the UK over escalating casualty figures.

Mr Brown yesterday left open the possibility that a supposedly temporary increase of 700 in UK troop levels ahead of forthcoming Afghan elections could become more permanent, as fighting in Helmand intensifies.
