WHO in ground-breaking treatment drive

The World Health Organisation is to launch a ground-breaking new prevention and treatment programme which uses drugs like vaccines to tackle diseases that affect hundreds of millions in the developing world but have in the past been neglected.

In new guidelines to be released this week, the agency calls for the use of “preventative chemotherapy” to provide large volumes of drugs to treat four types of disease that cause serious illness and stunted development over a lifetime, sharply slowing economic growth.
