Indian party pushes for confidence vote

India’s opposition Bharatiya Janata party (BJP) is clamouring for the dissolution of the government as fraught discussions continue within the fragile ruling coalition over a nuclear energy pact with the US.

The BJP demanded at the weekend that Manmohan Singh, the prime minister, call an early session of parliament to seek a vote of confidence, claiming that the ruling United Progressive Alliance (UPA) had “lost its moral legitimacy”.
