Carbon capture & storage: Right climate for innovation

The North Sea oil and gas that has brought riches to Scotland for decades is running out faster than had been predicted. But North Sea oil could be about to spawn a new industry that will take up some of the slack.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is one of the biggest new hopes for combating climate change. The technology involves taking carbon dioxide from large sources, such as coal-fired power plants or big industrial installations, condensing and piping it to underground storage reservoirs – such as the depleted oil and gas fields of the North Sea.
