Country’s performance starts to waver

Austria may be known as the “island of the blessed”, thanks to a phrase coined by the late pope Paul VI in the early 1970s.

But when the financial tsunami hit its shores in September, the small alpine country was just as affected as its larger counterparts in the eurozone. The Vienna stockmarket suffered massive losses, economic growth ground to a halt, and some of the country’s biggest banks turned to the government for aid to weather the crisis.
