Buddhist monks free Burmese officials

Buddhist monks in Burma freed on Thursday a group of government officials they had seized in a stand-off over the regime’s use of force to disperse several hundred monks protesting against a sharp rise in fuel prices.

The dramatic seizure in the town of Pakokku – a major centre of Buddhist learning – came a day after security forces fired warning shots and beat the demonstrating monks.
