Arab states squirm as anger rises

As tens of thousands of people demonstrated across the Arab world against the Israeli raids in Gaza, regional governments found themselves under renewed pressure to help the Palestinians, but with little room for manoeuvre.

Arab foreign ministers are due to meet in Cairo on Wednesday to press for a ceasefire, but they have little leverage over either Hamas or Israel, and the most they can hope for is that the US will intervene to rein in the Jewish state.
