Recovery of pure science 'exaggerated'

Changes in the way students are categorised and the growing popularity of subjects such as sports science and psychology have greatly exaggerated an apparent recovery of pure science subjects at universities, a report by the Royal Society has found.

Policymakers have been alarmed at the decline of economically important disciplines and have expressed relief over recent large increases in the number of students studying first degrees in maths and biology.
