China yesterday accused the Hong Kong-based correspondent for the Singapore Straits Times of being a spy, but his newspaper said it was shocked by the charge and his wife said he was a legitimate journalist.

Ching Cheong, the Straits Times' chief China correspondent, has been held for more than a month. Coming after the detention of a New York Times researcher, the case has heightened concerns about China's treatment of foreign news staff.
