EU executive arm gears up for reform

José Manuel Barroso on Thursday vowed to put economic reform at the heart of his five-year tenure as president of the European Commission, as he unveiled his team of commissioners to take office in November.

In a ritual that has in the past been dominated by fierce controversy between European Union member states, Mr Barroso allocated the most important economic portfolios in the EU's executive arm to the Netherlands, Ireland, Germany and Britain.
