Hidden cost of price-comparison websites

Would-be borrowers may be unwittingly damaging their credit records by shopping around for deals and using price-comparison websites. Some lenders are now carrying out full credit checks even when consumers are only seeking a price quote, leaving a “footprint” on consumers’ files that can make them appear a higher credit risk.

As a result, lenders are coming under pressure to disclose the type of background checks they will make when offering a quote.
