Darkened computer screens and sparsely populated office floors throughout the capital marked the beginning of the festive period on Friday, as millions of travellers embarked on their holiday breaks early.

The Association of British Travel Agents estimates that 3.5m travellers are bound for overseas destinations over Christmas and the New Year.
