Brown announces first tranche of loan scheme

The first £1bn ($1.4bn) tranche of the government’s £10bn business lending guarantee scheme has been agreed, Gordon Brown announced on Wednesday.

The fees being paid by the banks to the taxpayer for guarantees under the £10bn working capital scheme will not be disclosed, the department for business said. ­Government insiders suggested that the fees would vary for each tranche of loans being underwritten, as well as for each participating lender.
