Northwest to propose new contract to ground workers

The union representing around 14,000 ground workers at Northwest Airlines agreed at the weekend to present a new contract proposal to members ahead of a court showdown on Tuesday which could still spark a strike at the bankrupt US carrier.

Northwest plans to ask the bankruptcy judge to reject its current contracts with pilots, flight attendants and the ground staff represented by the International Association of Machinists, following the expiration of temporary cuts agreed last November.
