Overview: Trading trends elusive amid torpor

Global markets struggled to emerge from their holiday season torpor on Friday, with traders in those major bourses that did open still reluctant to deliver any meaningful rally as the year draws to a close.

With so many financial centres shut, trading trends were hard to establish, though some themes of recent months persisted such as low government bond yields, a weak pound and rouble and an oil price struggling to break decisively clear of its recent downward trend.
