The prospects for the UK economy have deteriorated further and faster than that of any other advanced country this year.

Few complained as recently as March, when the UK Treasury forecast 2 per cent growth in 2008, followed by expansion of 2.5 per cent in 2009 and 2.75 per cent in 2010.
