Captain of industry to lead tax collectors

Gordon Brown spelt out his determination to headhunt a "captain of industry" to fill the top job at the merged revenue department, making clear the Treasury wanted someone with considerable business experience.

The publication of an advertisement for the post sparked speculation that the chancellor might turn to the financial services industry, where a number of current and former executives would have the necessary expertise.
