GM decision a setback for Merkel

General Motorsdecision to keep Opel, its European arm, is an embarrassing setback for Angela Merkel, the German chancellor.

Little more than an hour after she had taken off from Washington following a widely praised speech to the US Congress, reports emerged that her efforts to secure a takeover of Opel by Canada’s Magna and Russia’s Sberbank had come to nought.
