Avis Europe, the car rental group, narrowed its first-half losses as more people rented its vehicles over the summer but it continued to suffer from stiff competition.

The company also said full-year results would be hit less hard than it had feared by possible malpractice in its Portuguese subsidiary, responsible for about 3 per cent of the group's revenues.
