There is a recurring pattern to the build-up to every Olympic games. It is never precisely the same but the same stories recur on the calendar as regularly as February 29.

And sure enough, as Beijing 2008 got closer, up popped the hotel story. All those rooms blocked off, presumed full, at the very moment the president of the International Olympic Committee opened the envelope, turned out not to be so full after all.
