Brussels on Wednesday gave the go-ahead to a partial privatisation of Olympic Airways, but also said that €850m ($1.2bn) of illegal state aid granted to the loss-making Greek airline during the past three years needed to be repaid.

The announcement could mark the end of a long battle between the European Commission and Athens over subsidies to the carrier, dating back to the mid-1990s.
