Upbeat economic data boosts Croatia

Unexpectedly healthy second-quarter current account and merchandise trade figures have given a welcome boost to Croatia on the eve of Friday’s renewed accession talks with the European Union.

The current account deficit amounted to only €901m ($1.3bn, £822m) for the second quarter of this year, a contraction of 51 per cent compared to the same period in 2008, according to the official statistics bureau.
