Sky wants Ofcom probe of Canvas

Pressure is intensifying for further regulatory scrutiny of plans by the BBC, BT and ITV to build a successor to Freeview. BSkyB is adding its voice to concerns raised in recent weeks by the regulator and device makers about the trio’s plans for a new standard for TV set-top boxes, codenamed Project Canvas.

The BBC Trust launched a consultation on Canvas, which would bring internet video to the TV set, in February. Sky, whose subscription packages would compete with the free service, has challenged the rigour of that inquiry, demanding a full market assessment by Ofcom.
