When the editor of an outspoken left-wing weekly was recently abducted at night, beaten up and left naked on a highway outside Cairo, only one Egyptian daily splashed the story on its front page.
Al Masri Al Youm gave immediate and prominent coverage to the attack on Abdel Halim Kandil, for which he alleged the interior ministry was responsible. In the main state-owned dailies, however, the story was not thought to merit more than a mention.
