US forces continued their assault on the guerrilla stronghold of Falluja on Sunday as pressure mounted on Tony Blair to clarify deployment of UK troops iin support of the Americans around Baghdad.
Residents reported fresh aerial and artillery attacks on the eastern edge of the city as the US ratcheted up efforts to oust Jordanian militant leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi. In a separate incident nine Iraqi policemen died in an ambush near Latifiya, south of Baghdad, police said.
