Tremonti upbeat about Italian economy

In spite of statistics showing Italy on the brink of recession, Giulio Tremonti, finance minister in the new centre-right government, remains upbeat, insisting the figures do not tell the whole story.

Italy’s economy may be flat, but its financial sector is healthier than several of its European Union competitors, and its downturn less steep, he says, drawing comparison with Spain, Ireland and the UK.
