Blair embarks on third term with vow to listen

Tony Blair on Friday began a historic third term as UK prime minister with a vow to listen to the message of protest sent by disaffected voters who slashed his parliamentary majority in Thursday's general election.

Opposition to the Iraq war, questions about Mr Blair's integrity and broader dissatisfaction with an incumbent government after eight years in office all combined to drive down the Labour vote to 36 per cent, compared with almost 41 per cent in 2001.
