Global Insight: When boring becomes a virtue

In recent weeks Jean Daniel Gerber, the Swiss secretary of state for economic affairs, has been receiving some grateful messages from his eastern neighbours. The reason?

A couple of months ago panic was bubbling in countries such as Hungary and Poland about the seemingly inexorable strengthening of the Swiss franc. That was threatening to make it harder for east European consumers and companies to repay loans that many had (unwisely) taken out in francs.
