Talks on French jobs law end in stalemate

Dominique de Villepin, French prime minister, was last night facing the threat of a potentially explosive further protests after initial talks with trades unions over his unpopular labour reforms ended in stalemate.

Union leaders reacted angrily to President Jacques Chirac's insistence only hours before the start of the meeting that the youth employment law "must be applied".
