When Gazprom of Russia temporarily cut gas supplies to Ukraine this January, Europe’s love affair with gas came to an abrupt end.
In the UK, soaring wholesale gas prices in 2005 had pushed up energy bills, and spurred power generators and politicians to look at alternatives. But on the European continent, Gazprom’s actions – following a row with Ukraine about the price of its gas imports – put the issue of energy security at the top of the agenda.
