Learn to love end of secrecy, MPs told

The MPs’ expenses debacle shows how unjustified official secrecy can seriously damage public confidence, the information commissioner warned, in a valedictory push for greater openness in state bodies and the companies that deal with them.

Richard Thomas, who is stepping down this month after six years in the post, on Wednesday contrasted the chaos at Westminster after the unexpected payment revelations with the Scottish parliament’s controlled publication of similar details “almost from day one”.
