A newly identified early work by El Greco – “the Greek” – is due to be exhibited later this month in the city of Heraklion on the Renaissance painter’s native island of Crete.

The Baptism of Christ, which measures 24.5cm by 17.5cm, was found in Spain last October in a brown envelope at the back of a cupboard. It had belonged to the same family since the 19th century.
