José Sócrates, the prime minister, is a passionate supporter of the electric car and plans to switch to one as soon as they become available in Portugal at the end of this year.
That should be considerably earlier than in most European countries as a result of plans to make the country both a pioneer in the use of electric vehicles and an exporter of the related technology.
