Private equity industry wins tax battle

The private equity industry has won a long-running battle over the tax treatment of managers' equity investments after Revenue & Customs accepted legal advice that its approach was untenable.

A new position taken by the Revenue after the 2003 Budget threatened managers of companies backed by private equity with an additional income tax bill when they sold their shareholdings. But it has now withdrawn that threat.
