Insurers win cut in asbestos payout

Employers and their insurers have won a legal bid to reduce the amount they pay in compensation to former workers suffering from mesothelioma, the fatal asbestos-related disease.

Some estimates suggested the insurance industry would save tens of millions of pounds annually as a result of yesterday's decision by the House of Lords, although the Association of British Insurers declined to comment on this figure.
