Prescott to step down as deputy leader

John Prescott, the deputy prime minister, on Thursday brought down the curtain on one of the longest and most colourful careers in British politics when he confirmed his intention to quit as Labour’s deputy leader within a year.

The announcement followed a public apology for his role in the crises that have beset Tony Blair’s government in recent months.
