Theatres enjoy record performance

It may have been a disastrous year for the economy, but theatre-lovers made 2009 a vintage 12 months for the British stage, spending more than £500m on tickets at London box offices.

The Society of London Theatres announced on Wednesday box office revenues were up by 7.6 per cent on the previous year, while attendances also increased by 5.5 per cent to more than 14m. Both figures are records for the London stage.
