Gordon Brown was on Tuesday accused of “double-dealing” over the Lockerbie bomber, after official documents suggested the UK had told the Libyans the prime minister did not want him to die in jail.

The revelation increases the pressure on the government over the contentious early release of Abdelbaset Ali Mohamed al-Megrahi from a Scottish jail last month. The move has strained transatlantic relations and distracted from Mr Brown’s attempts to shift the domestic political agenda on to the economy.
