At the same time as the regulations governing cross-border payments in Europe are easing, technology is being developed that could eventually transform the way financial transactions are conducted.

One of the most alluring is contactless mobile payments - technically known as Near Field Communication - whereby a chip in a mobile phone enables it to be used as a payment device by simply waving it at a receiver in a shop, vending machine or other retail facility.
